In Act IV, Scene I of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, we see Friar Lawrence and Paris discuss how Capulet urgently wishes Paris and Juliet to marry. Soon, Juliet arrives on the pretense of making confession. Paris leaves Juliet and the Friar, but Juliet does not actually intend to make confession. Juliet is worried her parents want her to marry Paris soon, and she is already (secretly) married to Romeo. She is so upset that she says she wishes to kill herself. Friar Lawrence concocts a plan. He tells Juliet to go home and agree to marry Paris, for the sake of her parents. He gives her a potion and says she is to drink it the next night. The following morning, she will appear to be dead, and the family will place her in the family tomb, where the Friar and Romeo will come to rescue her so Romeo and Juliet may run away together.
