Crispin's real name is, in fact, Crispin, but he has gone most of his life not knowing this. In the town where he grew up, everybody refers to him in relation to his mother and calls him "Asta's Son." Even after Crispin's mother dies, people still usually call him Asta's Son. Through some unfortunate circumstances and a false accusation of theft, Crispin has to leave his village to escape the risk of imprisonment or death. While on the run, he finds out he is the illegitimate son of the recently deceased Lord Furnival. Although Crispin never knew his father and his mother never claimed any inheritance of the Furnival wealth for her son, this might make his full name Crispin Furnival.
